What is the motorcycle theory test?

The motorcycle theory test is part of the driver's license examination and must be passed before the driving test.

Transport and Communications Agency The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom specifies that the purpose of the theory test is to ensure that drivers have sufficient knowledge to drive safely and responsibly.

The theory test measures, among other things:

  1. Knowledge of traffic rules
  2. Understanding traffic signs
  3. Identifying and anticipating risks
  4. Safe driving in different situations

The theory test must be taken before the driving test, and the driving test cannot be booked without a passed theory test.

Motorcycle license categories in Finland

Motorcycle licenses are divided into three categories:

  1. A1 – light motorcycle (max. 125 cm³, max. 11 kW), age limit 16 years
  2. A2 – motorcycle with a maximum power of 35 kW, minimum age 18
  3. A – all motorcycles, age limit 24 (or 20 if A2 has been held for at least 2 years)

The theory test can be taken at the earliest one month before reaching the age limit for the relevant category.

Obtaining a driver's license also requires:

  1. Applying for a driver's license
  2. Taking the theory test
  3. Passing the driving test and handling test
How to prepare for the motorcycle theory test?

Effective preparation is based on three things:

  1. Understanding the theory
  2. Completing practice questions
  3. To repeat

Simply reading is usually not enough. To succeed in the theory test, you must:

  1. You recognize question types
  2. You understand the logic of risk thinking
  3. You practice in an environment that resembles a real exam
